SEMINAR DESCRIPTIONS

Routing Loose-Tenon Joinery
Bill Hylton
The mortise and tenon is one of woodworking's oldest, strongest, most versatile, and frequently used joints. Bill teaches you how to make the loose-tenon version of the joint using a plunge router, edge guide and a jig you can make yourself. He even shows you how. See joints cut for web frames, cope-and-stick doors, leg-and-apron stands, chairs, even architectural doors, all with the same router and jig. It's simple, strong, and inexpensive. This is know-how every woodworker can use.
Secret Drawers, Hidden Compartments and Locking Mechanisms
Charles Bender
Secret drawers and hidden compartments have long been a part of furniture making, adding intrigue and extra dimensions to the work. Often associated with traditional furniture, it’s easy to incorporate the same features in any furniture style from contemporary to experimental. In this informative class with Charles, you’ll see how to make secret drawers and hidden compartments, a variety of locking mechanisms and learn how to build them into your next project.
Marquetry and Inlay In Depth
Jane Burke
Marquetry is veneer of different wood species used to create a design or picture. Jane teaches you how to make inlays, medallions or veneer entire surfaces. Learn what tools are needed, where to find designs, how a pattern is transferred and how to choose veneer. The craft knife cutting technique is demonstrated as well as gluing veneer onto a substrate. Sanding techniques and which finishes are best to use when working with wood veneer are also discussed.
Router Table Magic
Bill Hylton
If you don't have a router table yet, you should! Bill covers basic and safe router table know-how that will improve your quality and efficiency. You’ll learn how to micro-adjust any fence, use a starting pin, make damage-free cuts, deal with dust and maintain safe control of the workpiece. Watch Bill cut joints, make moldings and demonstrate simple template work. All router tables are the same and this know-how will apply to whatever router table you own.
Finishing Techniques
Peter Gedrys
With dozens of products to choose from, finishing can be daunting prospect. Peter takes the guesswork out of your next project, as he covers all the basic finishes available: oil varnishes, water based coatings, lacquers and shellac. Additional time is spent on shellac and dispelling the myths surrounding this very versatile product. Peter concludes with a discussion on the varieties and then how you can mix your own from flakes as well as various application techniques.
Dyes, Stains and Glazes
Peter Gedrys
Peter covers the basics of color and how to use it to your best advantage. You’ll learn the differences between the coloring mediums, the pros and cons of each and application techniques. This in depth class gives you the tools to color match sapwood to heartwood or bring variances between boards into visual harmony. As an example, Peter takes a piece of poplar and then turns it into cherry. It’s not magic, but he makes it seem that way.
Edge Details
Garrett Hack
Edges are everywhere in furniture, along tabletops, around drawers, doors, cases and legs. Each is an opportunity to add some decorative interest, besides the practical concerns that sharp edges are unfriendly and more vulnerable to damage than one slightly rounded or chamfered. Garrett explains while he demonstrates how to make several great edge treatments that can be done with basic tools, from simple chamfers, to side beads and applied cockbeads, molded edges, underbevels, and inlaid edges.
Hand Tool Joinery: Beyond the Basics
Frank Klausz
Frank zooms in on joinery skills, applications and techniques. You’ll learn how to hand cut through and half blind dovetails, sliding dovetails, finger joints and rabbeted joints. Carcass and casework are also discussed. Watch and learn from his unique hand planing techniques as he explains how to create perfect edge joints, when and how to make them stronger. Frank discusses design considerations that impact on lay-out and fitting as he shares his tried and tested methods.
Lamination, Demystifying the Process
Garrett Hack
Lamination is a great technique for creating strong, light, consistent, and stable curved parts. Garrett covers the entire lamination process from lifting a curve from a drawing, to making a form, sawing thin laminations, gluing and clamping, and finally truing and sizing the laminated part. He also discusses the advantages of lamination over other methods, dealing with different woods, glue choices, form designs, clamps vs. vacuum bag, and a few unusual lamination methods such as tapered, partial, and hybrids.
Three Essential Power Tools for Beginners
Charles Bender
Want to get started doing woodworking projects but feel confused about the different types of equipment needed and your budget is limited? Charles is the problem-solver for you. In this useful class, he covers three essential tools to buy first: tablesaw, bandsaw and the router and what to look for when shopping to buy them. You’ll learn about jigs you can make and how using these foundation tools means there isn’t much a beginner can’t do.

HANDS-ON WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Make a Hickory Stool
Geoffrey Noden
Geoffrey’s workshop is all fun as you learn how to use inexpensive hand tools to make a simple footstool. First, you’ll watch Geoffrey go through the entire assembly process as he shows you how to work “green”(wet) wood to form the legs and seat base and then weave a seat from the inner bark of hickory trees. After that, you make your own stool to take home and enjoy forever. Class size limited to 6.
Make a Turned Awl
Beth Ireland
This hands-on workshop is pure fun, but gets you safely on a lathe in minutes and in two hours, you’ll learn to turn and take home an awl. Beth covers a wide range of practical information on turning and the basic elements of spindle turning, measuring, sizing, and finishing. The awl is a tool used in all parts of woodworking for marking and punching and you’ll make your own tool that you can use for years to come. Class size limited to 8.
Making Decorative Details
Garrett Hack
In this workshop with Garrett, you’ll cut a variety of alluring and unique details using a simple tool you make. The tool is a scratchstock (steel, filed to shape and held in a wooden fence). After making your own scratchstock you’re ready to try making side beads, raised beads known as cockbeads, which are used to highlight the edge of a drawer, and fine inlay lines, known as strings. You’ll learn about other edge details like chamfers and bevels too. Class size limited to 8.
Make a Mahogany Tissue Box Cover
Frank Klausz
Frank demonstrates his world renowned artistry for making hand cut dovetails as part of the joinery for this project, then he shows how the joints fit together to create the box cover. After that, it’s your turn to pick up a saw. You’ll begin by marking dovetails using Frank’s simple method then it’s time to clamp the work and get sawing. Add a beautiful medallion to the basic cover, by registering for Jane Burke’s, Marquetry and Inlay Workshop too. Class size limited to 8.
Marquetry and Inlay Workshop
Jane Burke
In this hands-on workshop you’ll make a marquetry medallion using different wood veneers which are cut with a craft knife. Marquetry is a versatile art form which will add value and beauty to any of your woodworking projects. After completing this workshop you will have the skills to create beautiful pictures in wood, make inlays which can be inlaid into furniture, or to liven up an existing piece of furniture. Bring your reading glasses. Class size limited to 8.
